Hope for Women (HFW) is a non-governmental organization in the Maldives, registered in 2010, working towards ending all forms of violence against women and domestic violence, while also promoting gender equality and women’s participation in public life. At the moment HFW’s activities are mostly project-based with funding from few well-wishing individuals and organizations. However, it is exploring other avenues for resource mobilization in order to sustain the functioning of the organization and expand the scope of its work, in particular impacting public policy and improving outreach.
Objectives of HFW
To eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in the Maldives.
To protect and promote women’s rights as reflected in moderate and liberal interpretations of Islam
To promote measures that would make women self-reliant and empowered through policy dialogue with key stakeholders
To support the work of civil society organizations and state institutions that work towards gender equality and equity.
To encourage youth participation in protecting and promoting women’s human rights.
To ensure that the commitments enshrined in the international and regional conventions to which the Maldives is a party, are fulfilled by the state authorities.
To ensure that the services offered by the organization are provided without the use of incentives or disincentives of any kind and that no service is conditional upon the acceptance of another.
Organization’s Structure and Membership
Any person or institution having an interest in the objectives of the organization is eligible for membership, provided that the application is made in the form prescribed and conforms to the procedure for application for membership. The Executive Committee of HFW decides on the approval for membership.
The Executive Committee, elected at the Annual General Meeting of the organization is responsible for the effective and efficient governance of the organization.
At present, the organization has two salaried staff, an Admin Officer and Legal Officer.
