Hope for Women raises issues of gender injustice and violence against women with policy-makers and work to influence changes in the policies for the benefit of improved women’s rights’ protection. It also conducts civic education programs on gender and violence against women, and promote discussion in the media on causes, consequences and alternatives to women’s rights violations. Given the current situation in the Maldives where religious justifications or conservative Islamic teachings that use Islam as a tool to intimidate and repress women, and the lack of a broad socio-political approach to promote women’s rights and gender equality, Hope for Women is of the opinion that it has become incumbent upon all civil society actors to speak out and stand up against the widespread prejudices that encourage women to be relegated to a marginalized existence and sometimes subjected to extraordinary acts of violence.
