Global statistics show that one in three women in the planet is subject to being beaten or raped in her lifetime. This means that a staggering one billion women are victims of physical and sexual violence across the world. One Billion Rising is a campaign launched by US feminist and playwright Eve Ensler as a protest to end this violence, and to promote justice and equality for women. This campaign inspired people from over 200 countries from all over the world to take part in the revolution, Maldives being one of them.
One Billion Rising was officially launched in the Maldives by Hope for Women on the 25th of November 2012. On February 14th 2013, a number of Maldivians rose with the rest of the world in this historic event, pledging to end violence against women. The official event was held at the Republic Square, and many island councils from across the country held their own events at their respective islands.
In addition to taking a pledge to end violence against women, messages and signatures were collected from people who supported the cause.
